The state legislature in Title 82 of the Oklahoma Statutes, Sections 1601-1619 delegated the responsibility to local governmental units to adopt regulations designed to minimize flood losses. In January 2000, the Canadian County Commissioners adopted the Flood Damage Prevention Regulations. These regulations established the requirement of a permit for development in special flood hazard areas, i.e. the 100 year floodplain, in unincorporated Canadian County. Development is defined in the regulations as “any man-made change in improved and unimproved real estate, including but not limited to buildings or other structures, mining, dredging, filling, grading, paving, excavation or drilling operations or storage of equipment or materials.”

Therefore, before undertaking any development (as described above), please check with county floodplain management to see if a permit is required.

We appreciate your cooperation as the county works to reduce the likelihood of future flood damages and encourages the safe conveyance of flood waters. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.
