Development in the Floodplain
Oklahoma Water Resources Board
Oklahoma's Floodplain Management 101
Before undertaking any development (as described below) in unincorporated Canadian County, please check with county floodplain management to see if a floodplain permit is required.
In order for citizens of unincorporated Canadian County to be able to purchase affordable flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program, the local government of Canadian County must agree to set up regulations to permit development in the floodplains. Canadian County's Flood Damage Prevention Regulations, revised in August 2008, establish the requirement of a permit for development in the floodplains of unincorporated Canadian County. Development is defined in the regulations as “any man-made change in improved and unimproved real estate, including but not limited to buildings or other structures, mining, dredging, filling, grading, paving, excavation or drilling operations or storage of equipment or materials.”
We appreciate your cooperation as the county works to reduce the likelihood of future flood damages and encourages the safe conveyance of flood waters. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.
