With two major rivers running through Canadian County, flooding is a big
concern for our citizens. Unincorporated Canadian County is a member of
the
National Flood
Insurance Program (NFIP) which makes affordable flood insurance
available to our citizens. In order to be a member of the NFIP, Canadian
County must agree to regulate development in our floodplains.
Therefore,
a permit is required for any development in our
floodplains. Our county has a
Floodplain
Board, comprised of county citizens, which meets to approve
floodplain permits. Our County Commissioners and Floodplain Board
approved our
Flood Damage Prevention Regulations which specify how
development must take place in our flood hazard areas. Our County
Floodplain Administrator assists citizens with floodplain concerns and
permits. Canadian County’s Floodplain Management program strives to
educate the public about flood safety and encourages safe development in
our flood hazard areas.
